A story of transition by train caught on film.

By now, it is no surprise how much we enjoy train travel. Or Switzerland. Or hiking. Only this time we didn’t travel by train for a hut-to-hut hiking holiday, like we normally do. Instead, we made train journey the adventure itself, with hiking breaks in between long train days to stretch our legs.

We mostly followed the Grand Train Tour routes, with a few changes motivated by our desire to discover new places along the way. We had explored most of the starting and ending points of the major panorama express trains before, so this time we looked for something new along the route.

Here is a snippet of our adventure seen through my analogue lens - enjoy!

Day 1: 5 trains, 1 funicular

Munich (DE) - Zurich (CH) - Lucerne - Interlaken - Lauterbrunnen - Grütschalp - Mürren

Day 2: 27280 steps, 662m of altitude gain

Hike from Mürren to Rotstockhütte

Day 3: again 5 trains, 1 funicular plus 28655 steps

Mürren - Grütschalp - Lauterbrunnen - Interlaken - Spiez - Kandersteg - Zermatt with a hike from Kandersteg to Oeschinensee and back

Day 4: 28058 steps, 865m of altitude gain

Hike from Zermatt along the Zmuttbach and back via the Furi suspension bridge

Day 5: the Glacier Express

Zermatt - St. Moritz

Day 6: the Bernina Express plus 3 trains and 15307 steps

Celerina - St. Moritz, a walk around the St. Moritz lake, followed by St. Moritz - Tirano - Monza - Lugano

Day 7: the Gotthard Panorama Express plus 3 trains

Lugano - Arth Goldau - Zurich - Neuhausen Rheinfall - Zurich
